It's unreasonably hard to play with mortar now

Hi all, I'm posting in good faith.

I used to play on this server for a while, and over time I learned the spawnkill rule - that's fine, and it's justifiable. Then I come back, and apparently there are restrictions like being unable to use the mortar in spawn - probably one of the few places you can use mortar. But okay, fine.

Then I'm playing on SW Battery, and I use the mortar indoors and receive a 900s kick out of nowhere. I even checked the rules again before I came back from a hiatus. Apparently the reason is that using a mortar indoors is 'unfair', but I can't see how

A panzer does similar damage, and the player is far less vulnerable because they can actually move or pull out the secondary weapon.

I can imagine some maps where a mortar indoors is very difficult. On other maps it's easy. Whether using a mortar is 'abuse' or an 'unfair advantage' depends on the situation, and you can do similar mass-damage near an objective with arty or a mobile MG. Do the admins take this into account?

So why is the mortar targeted?

There is nothing abusive or particularly advantageous about using a mortar indoors. The game is designed such that you can do that, at the cost of being far more vulnerable to attacks, because you are literally a sitting duck when you use it. If a bunch of people can't kill one idiot with a mortar using it outside spawn, that says more about the quality of the players than it does about the mortar user. I think "skill issue" is the term I've heard.

I understand that mortar players are an easy target, and almost every player (including myself) is biased against them. But that doesn't mean the admins should add arbitrary restrictions like this, without even creating a rule for it. This manner of random interpretation when it suits a particular admin on a particular day is quite unfair.

If it's going to be a rule (and I hope you reconsider), then please make it one, and please warn people before kicking them for violating a particular interpretation of a new rule that has only been enforced for a few months in an unwritten way. I know I've made mistakes in the past, but this isn't spawnkill and as far as I can tell unrelated.

I will try to answer about all your concerns:

But okay, fine. - we added this restriction because there was no option to kill mortar player but only with smg (you cant shoot any heavy, nade etc in the fixed spawn)

2. Apparently the reason is that using a mortar indoors is 'unfair', but I can't see how - mortar splash damage is far bigger comparing to pf but the main reason is that, when on the server is 20 vs 20 players and many maps are small with narrow corridors this causes players to be blocked by each other and mortar can be placed in on spot and just make armageddon (for example stairs on et_beach map). 

3. The game is designed such that you can do that, at the cost of being far more vulnerable to attacks, because you are literally a sitting duck when you use it. - with 20 vs 20 in many cases there is no even option to reach mortar player, because teams are uneven etc, so maybe you are sitting in one place but still making massive damage to enemy team.

4. If it's going to be a rule (and I hope you reconsider), then please make it one, and please warn people before kicking them for violating a particular interpretation of a new rule that has only been enforced for a few months in an unwritten way. I know I've made mistakes in the past, but this isn't spawnkill and as far as I can tell unrelated. - this is a rule right now and I hope it will stay as a rule, yeah probably we should have plain information that mortar indoor is forbidden. About being kicked - I dont know your specific case, but usually we are not kicking right away, but if your history has shown that u were abusing our rules with mortar, admin can make his own decision and kick even ban right away if there were many warns/kicks before.

I remember your case. You were pissing off all server with your mortar all day long and were pretty proud of this, taunting other players.

That's because of players like you that we modified the server. Indeed it's no more possible to stand mortar in protected areas, was too unfair.

Also, the rules changed and you'll find rule 18 covering the fact that it is no more allowed to exploit mortar the way you were doing it.

I don't know what happened for your kick but I believe the admin who kicked you already had in mind your past behavior with this mortar and your proud intention to piss off all server with this weapon. We don't tolerate such behavior anymore, fun is for everyone, not only for you.
