I can understand that as an accessibility thing, but most of the functionality you describe is already there with sound and the compass map. The Environmental Awareness icons were really distracting because they aren't very precise and conflicted with where my ears think the person is (which is usually more correct). Several times the icons made me think a person was the other side of a wall, when they were further inside, to the left or right of where the icon suggested. I can see how it might help the hard of hearing though. And people who become almost entirely unaware of their surroundings when playing medic. 😄

Bugs to report - V2.76
StarScream replied to ::: ET UK POWER's topic in General Discussion & Suggestions
This is an ongoing issue that has been around for a while now. I'd guess that either the threshold of tank HP is different for 'not moving' and 'repairable' states (the check for whether the tank can move has a slightly different hp threshold than that for repair), there's some sort of race condition screwing with the repairable flag, or the tank is 'over-damaged' with a negative HP value that needs to be reset by another hit. What makes you think it's a memory leak? Does Task Manager show it taking up an absurd amount of memory? Both of those things make me think it's more likely your GPU is on the way out, sorry -
Welcome Weed! Now keep that mortar away from me

And that is what I used to see if a team is weak or not, but it really doesn't seem to correlate all that well to the actual performance of the team. As I said, the other day I constantly changed to the 'numerically weaker' team only to have them win. On Caen, for example, I have frequently seen an Allied team at around 4% successfully defend to the end.

This space intentionally left blank because I am an idiot who hit submit twice

Often there might only be a couple of TMs playing, if I moved every time the auto-balancer activated, I'd be moving teams every two minutes and that wouldn't help anyone. It's also difficult to figure out who the weaker team actually is. Since joining TM, I've done my best to try to consistently join the weaker team. Yesterday, for instance, I ended up switching several times to the team that seemed weaker and were complaining the most only to have those teams win the match each time I moved, and I'm pretty sure their victory wasn't down to me. Balance issues seem to come down to the following: Some players will always prefer to attack. Some players will always choose the strongest team. Shuffle often doesn't work, especially because of the two player types above who will go spec as soon as they are shuffled. Team strength, especially attacking team strength, can be dependent on a few experienced players. A weak attacking team with a small number of experienced players (like coverts and engineers on Siwa Oasis) can result in an early victory, making a weak team seem stronger. SR is meant to give an idea of this, but doesn't distinguish between combat skill and tactical smarts. Edit: also too many people on smaller maps, causing a meatgrinder / full hold effect. That's being fixed, it seems. I don't think there are any easy answers to this, apart from for TM members to keep an eye on everything and try to help a team that is obviously struggling.

Heeeeyyyyy! Good to see you Goat, was wondering when you'd join the forums I also would be happy to donate to server upkeep if that ever becomes a thing.

8 miles from the exchange?! Are you getting 2mbps or something? Mind you, my entire road was fibre-to-the-home enabled last year. Apart from my block of flats which is only a few feet from the big regional exchange building 😕 Welcome to the forums, I've seen you around quite a bit and it's been a pleasure to play with you! Glad to see another objective whore

Welcome ET UK POWER, I've seen you a lot recently!

Awesome, thanks Dmxj!

I've been thinking of doing some mapping, too! Haven't touched q3 engine mapping tools since the early 2000s so I'll have to familiarise myself with everything, but it shouldn't be too difficult. Hit me up on discord, I guess! If we do get serious about mapping, I can set up a test server and collaboration / versioning tools.

Heh, yes. I am just very clumsy around doors and vehicles. Yesterday I got crushed by the door of the safe on alpine assault. That was a new one.
-
I think that's because a shuffle mid-round can often give the attacking team an advantage, as a shuffle can completely eliminate a defence, especially if engineers are shuffled. You might as well shuffle and restart at that point.

Legacy update v2.76-1075-g765ea79
StarScream replied to MrMuppet's topic in General and Server Suggestions
That's probably sensible. I promised Arnaud I'd investigate some bugs, so I guess I'll have to set up the latest build at home (which will probably make it easier, to be honest). I'm scouring through a bunch of demos I've taken on TM ETL over the past 2 days and trying to note all the bugs with appropriate surrounding context. It is.. tedious. -
Hey PaaN! Welcome to TM! Now stop killing me with your artillery

If I remember correctly, peering through the mists of time, the old IFS clan I was a part of had soundpacks on their servers. Each member chose a short sound to represent them (playing as Dirk Action, I created a little fanfare sound) and they were meant to be used sparingly. They were not. One Halloween they added a terrible song I recorded about zombies and never took it off, and it was spammed to death. Even though the sounds could only be played by clan members, clan members in spec would just spam sounds to mess with the players. It was fun at first but quickly became tedious. It could be fun in moderation if everyone shows restraint. How likely is that, though?

Hi Froggy, and welcome! I agree with you about the teamwork, hope to see you when you're back!

Death Note was awesome! Welcome, ShoOty!

As you and Stumpel have pointed out there is a pro-allies bias with a lot of players (myself included) both in low-player matches and high-player matches. This bias inevitably unbalances the teams; at first for low-player matches, and over several matches for high-player matches. I don't think it is a distaste for the Axis side, but rather a preference on the part of many players to be on the attacking side, especially for those who value objective play. The solution, therefore, seems simple: ensure that there is a balance of maps - as close to 50% of maps as possible should allow Axis to attack; meaning both teams get to attack and defend with greater regularity.

Dammit, I only just found this auto-generated welcome thing. Thanks, everybody!

Hee, I'd be up for that, though the similarity in our names might get a little confusing! We've both already had minor existential crises in-game Also, when we're both on, any PMs to StaR also come my way (unless you add StaR's TM tag) so TM members, please be aware of that. If I realise they're not for me I deliberately ignore and try not to read them as they are none of my business. My work in 'cyber-security' (I hate that term) has helped me develop the ability to immediately forget any sensitive data I'm exposed to as part of an investigation, so that helps. All that said, I would be very happy to contribute to the community here in any way I can. You're all awesome. Thanks everybody, I look forward to seeing you all on the server!

Hi all, I've been playing on your wonderful servers for a couple of months now, so I suppose I should introduce myself.. I am 40 years of age, a fact that never ceases to horrify me, and live in the UK, also now a fact that never ceases to horrify me. Send help. It's madness here. I used to play ET many moons ago in the IFS clan as [IFS]DirkAction but as my skills have atrophied somewhat, I have chosen to return to my very old nickname / persona of StarScream. Like my namesake I am 2/3rds competent, and 1/3rd so breathtakingly stupid that you will wonder how I am able to navigate a keyboard and mouse. Or even a door. And, once again, like my namesake I do like to stop and gloat frequently, with optional maniacal laughter. It feels good to play on such a friendly server again, I never truly found a game quite as fun as ET and I am very glad to have found such a great server and people. To those of you who have been taken from us too soon by one of my mistimed rifle grenades, I salute you. And present you with a bill for my dry cleaning. Getting your blood and chunks off my jacket isn't cheap.
